24(S)-Hydroxycholesterol

Metabolite of cholesterol produced in the brain by the action of CYP46A1 thereby regulating brain cholesterol homeostasis [1]. Endogenous agonist for the nuclear receptor LXR [2]. Cerebrospinal fluid content of 24(S)-hydroxycholesterol is reduced in Alzheimer’s disease patients [3]. Induces RIPK1-dependent necrosis-like cell death in the absence of caspase-8 [4].
